October is National Fill-in-the-Blank Awareness (or Prevention) Month
Did you know that October is International Walk to School Month? No? Neither did I know that. Living in a rural area walking to school was not on our radar as my children were growing up. Sure, middle school and high school students that live in the center of town where the middle/high school is located do walk, that does not make for a lot of walkers.
It is also:
National Bully Prevention Month
National Dental Hygiene Month
National ADHD Awareness Month
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
National Down Syndrome Awareness Month
National Disability Employment Awareness MonthIt is also LGBTQ+ History Month
And Filipino American History Month
There is a week devoted to Mental Illness Awareness and Red Ribbon Week, which highlights the importance of living a drug-free life.
Project SAFE is celebrating National Substance Abuse Awareness Month
There could be more organizations trying to shine a spotlight on an important topic they want society to be aware of. Should school nurses be aware of these various concerns?
School Nurses are in a unique position of caring for students. Caring for students directly and for their families indirectly means we may be able to bring attention to some of these topics. We often have bulletin boards that can be used educate in colorful, creative ways. Pick a topic that has meaning in your situation
