Why this, why now
I’ve been a school nurse in a preschool for over 30 years. Why in a preschool? My middle child was born with Down syndrome and she attended a Special Education preschool that integrated after we were there for several years. I kept advocating for typical children in the classrooms to provide typical role models for the children with disabilities. Once my daughter transitioned to public school I was hired and have been there ever since. Even after I retired, I was rehired per diem to continue to provide supervision for nurses and write health care plans for the students in need.
Community
This will be a place for information both from a parent perspective as well as a professional perspective. Some information may be tailored towards a parent, but helpful for the professional; other information may be right for the professional but helpful for a parent to read as well.
2003 my boss sent me to a 40 hour advocacy training. She saw value in having a nurse, already raising a child with a disability, having in-depth knowledge of services in the broader community that parents might need. My daughter with Down syndrome was a phenomenal ambassador as well.
One thing parents need is help with navigation- as a physician:parent I lent an ear often- hope you can do that for the larger community- bravo 👏🏻
